Drain Protection — How to Protect Drains from Chemical Spills
Chemical spills are hazardous to the environment as well as your facility and your employees. And they’re hard to prevent altogether, try as you may. Someone might trip and bump into a drum, or drop what they were carrying, and so on.
So it’s important to be prepared — and ready to protect your facility and the environment.
One key thing you need when a spill should happen is drain protection — preferably in a hurry. Fortunately, the solution is easy enough: drain cover seals as well as spill stoppers and blockers.
There are excellent products available that are easy to keep around and put to work at a moment’s notice.
One of the most popular products is the Drain Cover Seal & Spill Stopper and Blocker II. It’s made out of solid tacky urethane, and is even reversible, so you won’t have to worry about which way to apply it. Just place it on the drain and you’re done.

The seal will be secure and durable no matter which side you end up using. Another nice thing is that it’s very light weight. That makes it easy to keep a supply of them around just in case there’s a spill.
And not only is it environmentally friendly in the usual sense of the word and because of what it does. It’s actually reusable! Just wash it, put the plastic film it came in back where it was, roll it on the tube it also came with, and then put it all back into the original container.
Another good quality: it is also resistant to chemicals, and in fact is compatible for use with a wide variety of chemicals, including most oils and solvents.
You can get drain protectors in various sizes to fit your needs, and you can even have them custom made if your drains should be unusual in shape or size.
One last point… make sure your drain protector is at least 6″ larger than the drain you want to protect!
