Selecting the right oil absorbent booms

Oil absorbent booms can be the perfect solution when there’s an oil spill. Especially, if that oil spill is in an area where the oil needs to be removed quickly. This could, for example, be the case if there’s an oil spill in a body of water.

Whether you need to remove oil or other hydro-carbon substances, and especially if you need to do so quickly and from a watery surface, the tools of choice will probably be oil absorbent booms. The reason why they’re so effective is that they’re highly absorbent — but they only absorb oil while repelling water, so they won’t become waterlogged.

This feature also means that they will actually float on water even when filled to capacity — because oil is lighter than water, and they will absorb no water at all.

Can they be used on spills that occur on land as well? The answer is yes. They’re really like giant sponges or mops that only soak up any oily liquids while repelling water. And they don’t just absorb oil either, but other related substances as well, including diesel, gasoline, jet fuel, and kerosene. However, the exact liquids will vary depending on which type of oil absorbent boom you get.

How are they able to absorb so much oil so quickly? The secret lies in their filler, polypropylene, which is super absorbent. Their polypropylene cores are then generally encased in a tough mesh skin.

Depending on which boom you get, it may also have very sturdy nylon cords with metal clips, which can be used to connect a number of booms together.

Be careful to keep them away from corrosives though. That would destroy them quickly.

The oil absorbent booms have a bright white color, which allows you to see at a glance when they’re full and need to be replaced. Most of them have a diameter of 5 or 8 inches, and are 10 or 20 feet long.

Because they’re available in various sizes, it’s easy to get just the right number and kind of booms that you need for a specific spill. Of course, you’ll also want to keep a few oil absorbent booms handy in case of an unexpected spill.
